Dr. Dave and the Zodiac

Shrinkrapradio takes on the issue of the Zodiac Killer in show #99. Dr. David van Nuys has co-authored a book about the Zodiac: "This Is the Zodiac Speaking." In show #99, he interviews Doug Oswell who also wrote a book on the subject: "The Unabomber and The Zodiac." Oswell marks the similarities between the Zodiac killer and the Unabomber and suggests this could be one and the same person.

Dr. Dave doesn't very much challenge that idea, but does push Oswell to completely try and make his case. I must admit I haven't read the book, nor anything about the book. I do not think I am going to make much of a study of either the Zodiac or the Unabomber. So I am not really entitled to criticism, but based on this interview here goes anyway.

It is a very interesting expose and it is definitely a compelling analysis of the types of serial killers that are about there. It is a step too far though, to emphasize the similarities between the two cases and when finding that the Unabomber has no alibi for the Zodiac killings that they might be the same person. Once you have set the typology, you actually make a case for a category, hence there being more of a kind. How large was California in the sixties? Large enough to contain both a not yet active Ted Kaczynski and a, still not caught, Zodiac killer? One cannot rule it out.

Dr. Dave also doesn't seem too convinced. He is impressed by the study Oswell has done and is magnanimous in admitting Oswell has noted things David van Nuys himself overlooked, but he also points out the seeming differences between what we can surmise about the person of the Zodiac and about Kaczynski.

Hans Dorrestijn: Simeks excuus

Als ik Hans Dorrestijn hoor zingen, heb ik wel waardering voor de uitbeelding van de getormenteerde ziel. Waar hij begint te spreken, vraag ik me echter meteen af, waarom hij dat beeld ook in zijn gehele gedrag mee moeten nemen. Ik kan me moeilijk voorstellen dat het de menselijke staat van Hans Dorrestijn is om sukkelig, wanhopig, jaloers en apathisch pessimistisch te zijn en niets anders. Ik ga er toch van uit dat de mens gelaagd is; dat er onder het vernis een nieuwe laag zit met andere tinten en zo verder.

Het was daarom wel fascinerend om hem geinterviewd te horen door Martin Simek. Er blijft heel veel van de buitenste vernislaag over. Er komt ook in een uur niet veel meer uit Dorrestijn dan de geplaagde en verwrongen persoon van zijn liedjes, maar er is net voldoende toevoeging, met name in de vorm van zelfreflectie, die het geheel doen ademen.

Dorrestijn zegt bijvoorbeeld: 'Het is niet zo dat je als mens gelukkig moet zijn of dat het anders allemaal geen zin heeft. Ik leef heel goed met de wanhoop en het leed. Het is niet altijd even sterk en het overschaduwt niet alles totaal.' (Ik parafraseer natuurlijk) Dat geeft de dichter niet alleen relief, het maakt hem ook geloofwaardig.

Het is daarom een heel waardevolle podcast geworden, waarbij ik me alleen afvraag waarom Martin Simek zo gretig, Hans Dorrestijn als excuus aangrijpt om over hoeren te praten. Hij komt er gelukkig te laat mee, zodat het gesprek niet afglijdt naar een uitwisseling van ervaringen van hoerenlopers. Het leidt alleen maar tot een oproep aan de luisteraar om zijn ervaringen aan Simek te schrijven. Ik hoop vurig dat het daarbij zal blijven.

Low Audio

Here is a very useful hint for podcast listeners (and mp3 player users in general). For it happens frequently you have to deal with audio files that have a very low volume level. For example, I am struggling my way through the podcast lectures of Professor Muller: Physics for future presidents. I have reached quantum physics and need all the attention I have to follow. But Muller has reached an audio level that is so low, I cannot even listen to the cast in my car. Well, it is summer, the air conditioning is stronger than usual, but still. The only place where I can get to the excited states of electrons and see if I can get a grasp on the workings of plasma screens and laser printers is in my bed.

Every father of young children knows the sleep deprivation that comes with bringing up the adorable brats. As a result, the bed is causing instant sleep and no quantum mechanics can stop me. I have to go over the lectures many times and still miss out onm them.

The solution is to enhance the audio and luckily there is a utility to do so. It is called mp3gain and it can be downloaded for free. One has to doctor the mp3 files before listening and then you will not have to turn the volume as loud as you used to in order to get the same level. Great stuff.

Thomas Dekker tiende

Na een etappe met een massasprint op het eind, heb je normaal gesproken geen veranderingen aan de top. Dat Dekker toch zakt van de 8e naar de 10e plek, heeft te maken met de bonificatie seconden. Hushovd en Millar pakten seconden met hun klassering in de etappe en sprongen daardoor over Dekker heen. Vandaar dat onze jongen in de tour nu 10e staat in het klassement.

You are not a Skeptic if you're not skeptic

I wrote to the Skeptics' Guide to the Universe, after the podcast had mentioned the case Sickesz vs. VtdK and I had blogged about it. The nice thing is, my mail was mentioned on the latest show (#102). That's nice. The blog is also mentioned, that is even nicer. But the nicest thing is the Skeptics prove to really be skeptics.

They read the blog and not matter it is called Anne is a Man!, they treat the writer Anne Frid de Vries as a she. She writes this, she goes on to say, etc etc. I think this is a point for SGU. Never take anything for granted. However, dear skeptics, I am really a man. Look at the picture, just so that you can be convinced.

While I am making side notes, let me make two more. One is: Perry is right; the VtdK must dissolve itself and a new association against quackery must arise and they must not go and publish the rectification that Mrs. Sickesz is not a quack - because she in fact is. However, and this is the side note, it is not going to help the president of the VtdK. Sickesz not only sued VtdK, but also the president. So even if the association goes bankrupt and from them the rectification or compensation cannot be coerced, from the president it can. And the bankruptcy laws are not very comforting for real people (natuurlijke personen) if they still are as they were when I left the country.

The second side note is on how I think, as a legal professional, the court should have handled such a case. I think that anybody who offers medical services out of the realm of EBM (evidence based medicine) is automatically loading on him or herself the suspicion of quackery. With little extra scrutinizing of the made claims, just as the VtdK did, this person can be called a quack and the quack must show evidence of the contrary if he wants to rid himself of the label. If on the contrary, one must prove quackery, there is almost, if not completely, an impossible task. When no connection with EBM is there in the first place, there is likely to be no study and in particular cases, the inherent claim will likely be that such studies are not valid anyway. In such an approach NOBODY can be called a quack and then the law would rule out a certain opinion as forbidden to be uttered in general which is against the freedom of expression. Hence, since Mrs. Sickesz is outside the realm of EBM and you can look at her claims and see that they are not reliable, then she can be called a quack. Mevr. Sickesz is een kwakzalver!

Thomas Dekker achtste

Gisteren is de tour begonnen met de proloog en zoals beloofd, we gaan deze tour de jonge Thomas Dekker volgen. Na de eerste kleine acht kilometer staat hij in het klassement op de 8e plek op 31 seconden van de leider.

Om te beginnen is dit een zeer goede start. Bij de eerste tien rijden in de proloog is een lekkere binnenkomer. Het plaatst de jonge renner ook bij de betere tijdrijders. Nu wisten we al dat hij een talent in tijdrijden had, maar in de tour is de koers altijd hard. Voeg daarbij de ambiance die totaal anders is dan in andere koersen en je hebt de ingredienten die maken dat gemerkte specialisten opeens door het ijs kunnen zakken, vooral de onervaren deelnemer.

De uitslag brengt Dekker ook op de tweede plaats in het jongerenklassement, een rangschikking waar hij tot de kasnhebbers voor een overwinning gerekend mag worden. Maar: Parijs is nog ver.
