European Cultural History Course

About 70 lectures given by George L Mosse at the University of Wisconsin Madison - quite a few years ago.

I used the "downloadthemall" program to download the MP3s. This was a bit of work to do as you have to go to each lecture page separately for a lot of the lectures.

I have not yet listened to them all, but what excerpts I have listened to have given me a good flavour, and I look forward to listening to the whole course.

My name is Syd. I conduct a comedy podcast named The Argument (feed). It usually makes special time for the ridiculous, or otherwise absurd kinds of debates you get into with your friends about nothing and everything. These topics rarely, if ever, include anything of any social substance, as we prefer to discuss things like "Immortality: Would You Life Forever If You Could?" or the merits of using Facebook or not. The podcast is recorded in Louisville, KY. This is something we're revisiting, as the Argument was a podcast we'd initially conducted about three to four years ago, and those episodes should soon be up again, so we should have approximately 26 episodes. So far, I've only read published poems (52), and they're in the same order as the book. But now that my Podcast has been out for a month, I'll start adding more new and unpublished poems...
Anything to give parents a few minutes break while sparking the imaginations of their children!

Hello everyone,

Announcing a new Catholic podcast that examines books and movies from a Catholic perspective.

It features Scott Danielson and I (Julie Davies from Forgotten Classics - AFDV) who have a lot in common. We are both frequent contributors to SFFaudio (a science fiction audiobook review site and podcast) and also both practicing Catholics. After an SFFaudio podcast one week (the Readalong about The Stars My Destination), we realized that there was a lot to say about some of these books from a Catholic perspective, and we were leaving much of it unsaid. This led to the idea of a podcast where we talk about books and movies “as Catholics”.

So we did it! We just posted the first episode – where we discuss Alden Bell’s excellent zombie novel The Reapers Are the Angels. The podcast is called A Good Story is Hard to Find (feed).  The iTunes feed will be coming soon.

I'd love you to check out the podcast. As far as I'm aware, it's one of the most intensely produced film podcasts on the internet (and I'm an avid listener of film podcasts.)

The WINNEBAGO MAN episode is probably a good starting point - although there are career retrospective interviews with the likes of Malcolm McDowell and Ray Harryhausen on there as well.

I'd like to point your attention towards our podcast, The Chronic Rift, a weekly podcast on news, reviews, interviews, and discussion of pop culture. The show is based on our popular New York public access show of the nineties. Our show is broken down into three types of programs, In Review, Spotlight, and Roundtable with a heavy emphasis on science fiction, fantasy, horror, and comic art. Hello. My name is Robert Hamilton, the co-producer of a short comedy podcast called "THE ALLIGATOR - I Might Be A Croc, I Don't Know - SHOW".

We've just started our sixth week of podcasting, and have about a year's worth already recorded and in the queue. I'm sure you know how challenging building an audience can be, especially with any form of offbeat humor that is looking for its niche. We've been performing these sorts of skits for family and friends for years, and were urged by several people to go public with them. The premise takes a little getting used to, and is certainly not intended for a broad audience. Needless to say, it might not be your cup of brew. But then again, it might just bite your funny bone.

This podcast features our friend, Alligator, in skits from an imaginary swamp. Alligator spouts thought-provoking nonsense, and eats almost anything he can get his jaws around. He's no dummy, though: In the midst of his babble you'll likely hear references to science, math, technology, and arcane vocabulary, as well as thinly veiled commentary on contemporary topics. Alligator is always coming up with new theories and inventions, which may amuse and will definitely confound you. Sometimes surreal, often thoughtful, and full of improvisation.

On the off chance that you might actually listen to several of these shows, please be advised that listening to Alligator is like eating hot peppers: You don't want to consume too many at one time!
These podcasts are usually less than 10 minutes.

It is VERY funny and philosophical. In fact It is the philosophical angle which connects with of the other things I have been discussing. If you decide to listen the the most recent episode (featuring Dave Hill), you will hear Marc expound on his relationship with his cats. You'll have to listen for yourself because I don't want to ruin it. Suffice it to say he quickly covers the metaphysics of "self", "identity," and "religion," in this context.

Damn and blast both David Barr Kirtley and John Joseph Adams!

These two rogues are the hosts of The Geek’s Guide To The Galaxy podcast. I have had good reason to curse them publicly. Their podcast is both a terrific listen week after week, and is often horning in on SFFaudio’s territory (by talking about audiobooks). I’ve held my tongue until this latest incident. These two hoseheads, Kirtley and Adams, have now gone too far! They’ve poached Dan Carlin as their guest for next week’s podcast.

This is a scandalous thievery. We posted our plan to get Carlin a full 4 Hours and 44 minutes before they did!

And so while I cannot possibly condone their unwarranted guest poaching, I cannot also, in good conscience, deny their podcast’s high quality. Thus it is with disgust I must hold my nose and recommend you subscribe to The Geek’s Guide To The Galaxy podcast.

But also let it be know, across the internet, that The Geek’s Guide To The Galaxy is formally ON NOTICE as of right now. You’d better not wander into any dark alleys Kirtley/Adams.

I just recently found this really interesting podcast... I thought you might want to do a review of. These 3 guys in Chicago pair wine and movies together.... They taste, discuss and review both at the same time... it's really interesting, and kinda funny too. I actually learn a little about wine too. (it's not condescending which is nice) it's called "Reel Pour" and I found it on itunes, check it out.

Improv Everywhere - The Ice Podcast

I am not overly fond of podcasts that have a crew that is freely engaging in small talk among each other. It can be thrilling, but it is mostly boring and eavesdropping upon other people's conversations is not exactly my cup of tea. And so, I was not sure how to tackle a review of the reported podcast The Ice Podcast. (feed)

But then, the host of the podcast Chris Crookall was kind enough to point out to me that his podcast had also the occasional interview. He especially recommended the conversation with Matt Adams from Improv Everywhere. And rightfully so. In a very natural and accessible way we get to know the project of Improv Everywhere in which Matt Adams is part and about which he attempts to make documentaries (see Matt's web page). The idea is that we are all stuck in our routine perceptions of the world and the people of Improv Everywhere operate in the everyday world (mostly in New York city) and create scenes that force the bystanders to look at their surroundings freshly again. One of the discussed examples is a scene in which the agents of Improv Everywhere start singing in the food court - see video.

Magazine in the 90's, now have a radio show. Metal Rules Radio (feed) interviews musicians/personalities in the metal music community, reviews song submissions from up and coming artists, and has fun discussing a variety of topics every show. New episodes are posted every Sunday.

Seeing as there is a chance this comment will go ahead if you don't get a chance to review the podcast I'm going to say that With Cheese (feed) is the world's most direct source of profound knowledge and insight, at absolutely no cost to the listener they are transported on a journey into the minds of four of today's greatest thinkers, only to be shot out into the world an hour or so later fundamentally changed and at least one stop past their chosen destination.
I hope for the sake of those seeking divine inspiration that you can find the time to review "With Cheese" and see that I may have exaggerated the wisdom, but underplayed the humour.

On the Podcast Parlor I got two recommendations for German podcasts from Frank O.

Küchenradio (feed)
Frank writes: "I like kuechenradio.org (interviews etc.), a spare time project of some radio journalists interviewing people in their kitchen (with varying quality, episodes I can recommend are e.g. 239, 116, 127, 47)."

Chaosradio Express (feed)
Frank writes: "Chaosradio Express is very good technical one, focusing on IT topics (as well as privacy and related political topics; there is also a quite interesting episode on coffee."

And last but not least Ronald sent me a link to a German radio station (Multikulti) that gives podcasts in various languages, among others in Russian.

Maybe I should stop complaining about not getting enough feedback on the blog. It is not getting me any more feedback anyway and there is one type of response I get so much of, I cannot handle it and that is the Report a Podcast section.

Podcasts of the most varied kinds are reported to me with a request to review. I used to want to review them all, but I have given up on those that simply do not fit well with the main stream of this blog. However, I loath to see all that effort go wasted and so here is an idea for change:

If you want to submit a podcast for reviewing, accompany it with a small description or review of your own. If I do not come round reviewing the podcast that same month (or even week if the flow will expand some more), I will post what YOU have written at the end of the month (or week). And thus, none of the recommendations have to go lost.

You can communicate your podcast tips by leaving a comment anywhere in the blog or send me a mail, Anne Frid de Vries (in one word) AT yahoo DOT co DOT uk. Less preferable to me, though it can work as well is letting me know through Twitter or Facebook or Stumbleupon.

Before you report, check with the list of reviewed podcasts. There are so many of them, yours may be there already.
