Robert Heinlein according to Ran Levi

Every once in a while, עושים היסטוריה! עם רן לוי (Making History with Ran Levi) pays attention to a writer and his work, mostly in the realm of Science Fiction in stead of digging into a subject of the history of science which is Ran Levi's usual subject. These are invariably great episodes.

Among these generally recommended is specifically the recently delivered episode about Robert Heinlein. With great respect, admiration and the usual, typical Israeli tongue in cheek, Ran Levi goes over Heinlein's biography, work and the wild variety of interpretations available. Heinlein is portrayed as a very original figure whose ideas cannot be molded into one commonplace stream or another, yet which stands out as smart, challenging, provocative and eventually accurate.

Apart from all the content of literature and political philosophy, the way Ran Levi deals with Heinlein involves enough science, history and technology to make it neatly fit in with the general subject of the series. Once again, he has shown to be, by far, the most professional Israeli podcaster.

Adjiedj Bakas en Gijs Wanders bij voor 1 nacht

Vorige week schreef ik dat ik niet elke uitzending van KRO's voor 1 nacht even sterk vond. Ik had mijn indruk onder meer gebaseerd op het begin van de gesprekken van Marc Stakenburg met enerzijds Gijs Wanders en anderszijds Adjiedj Bakas.

Beide gesprekken hebben akelig oppervlakkige momenten. Het is niet alleen Stakenburg die zijn gasten benadert met een comfortabele vraagstelling, het is ook de overdaad aan ontoepasselijke muziek en tenenkrommend goedkope en makkelijke generaliserende uitspraken van met name Gijs Wanders, waarbij het dieptepunt wordt bereikt met zijn geborneerd stereotype beschrijving van Oost-Groningen. Ik was al afgehaakt en doorgeschakeld naar het gesprek met Arnon Grunberg dat ik meteen veel beter vond en waarover ik mijn eerste recensie schreef.

Niettemin was het programma toch goed genoeg dat ik terugging om de twee anderen tot het eind uit te luisteren en opeens werden ze heel veel beter en zelfs het aanbevelen waard. Bakas en Wanders zijn nog steeds geen geweldig diepe gesprekspartners, maar wel mensen die oprecht hun werk doen en daar een waardevol inzicht in geven.

Wangari Maathai on Speaking of Faith podcast

APM's Speaking of Faith has the good habit of rerunning its great quality programs. Also on podcasts, subsequently, these chapters are published again. And so, for the fourth time in about four years, SOF aired Krista Tippett's inspiring conversation with Wangari Maathai.

Here is the guest post my wife wrote about this talk last year:

Krista Tippett is speaking with Dr. Wangari Maathai, 2004 Nobel peace prize winner who stood up to a dictator and won. Dr. Maathai organized a group of special women who fought off encroaching desert by planting 30 million trees in Kenya. Wangari Maathai elaborates about the relationship between ecological aspects of life, human rights, the legacy of her ancestors, religion and more. She notes that one of the sources for her strength to stand up against dictators (The Moi regime in Kenya) and win was her deep conviction that they knew that she was right. She laughs a lot, speaks in an almost casual way about her great achievements, cares in a genuine manner about the suffering of other human beings, gives much credit and respect to fellow women in her life (her mother, a woman partner to the planting trees action), enjoys the interaction with western culture and yet has much respect to her roots. Indeed, a great, wise, well-balanced, impressive human being.

Professor Matthew Gabriele's podcast that accompanies a lecture series about Medieval Heroes. The podcast gives very brief guidance to the texts about the heroes.

The stumble peak

About a week ago I had a sudden rise in visitors on my blog. This phenomenon lasted for a couple of hours. Even if it went away, some of its effects are still felt and this gives those readers who want to actively support the blog (or any other site they love, for that matter) a good idea what they can do.

The spike was caused by StumbleUpon. Someone noted two of my pages on StumbleUpon and right after that, the hours of traffic came streaming in. As a matter of fact I still have some referrals from StumbleUpon daily. In addition, a sharp rise in RSS subscriptions came about.

And so, what you can do, for my blog and any other site you like, is note its pages at StumbleUpon. For this purpose, you must create an account over there and it is also advised to install the toolbar. From there on, you can give a thumbs up, on any page you visit. If you like, you can also add a review. From that moment on, the page is pushed to the StumbleUpon community.

As you amass your preferences, StumbleUpon will also help you find more pages that you like. You can click 'stumble' and you will be led to a page another stumbler noted and that you might like as well. It enhances your own browsing and it directs traffic to the sites you appreciate, which is great for those content makers like myself, who always hope to get a wider audience.
